In what context?

Word Choices: Ethnicity or The American Dream
you will be asked to choose one term from the two options and then write a 2–3-page (800-1000 word) extended definition on that word. In your essay, you consider the definition and uses of the term, past and present, and the role the term plays in our current lives. Your aim is to complicate the definition of the term (if you think we all know what a particular word means–“pornography,” for example–then you would not be wise to choose it) and to show how the complicated nature of its definition raises issues for us. Ultimately, you are out to make social commentary. And to offer a definition of your own which you believe might be useful (I don’t like essays that suggest that the word should be dispensed with or suggest it is just too difficult to define it–take a stab at defining it.)
One way of getting to a thesis is to pose questions to yourself. Let’s consider the word Feminism, for example, a word that continues to play a crucial role in our social politics. Has the term evolved over time, or does it still mean, or should mean, something very specific like “equal pay for equal work” and nothing more? In your essay, you could make a case for returning to the “original” definition but only after considering other or expanded definitions. Here’s a definition from a contemporary anthology of poems entitled Gurlesque: the new grrly, grotesque, burlesque poetics. “A feminist can be a badass in a dress. […] Glenum and Greenberg define a ‘Gurlesque’ aesthetic as ‘a feminine, feminist incorporating of the grotesque and cruel with the spangled and dreamy. ‘” I no longer use the term feminism for this assignment, by the way, because typically in the past I would get, contrary to the above, a kind of standard regurgitation of Wikipedia on the topic, first wave, second, and third wave, etc. Don’t write a bunch of generalities, rather provide specific examples that complicate the definition. I’m interested in your particular take on the subject. Don’t rely on something you’ve looked up online.
Examples is just one method of definition, however. Below I’ve listed some other rhetorical strategies used to define terms.
History, background, etymology (When was the term first used? In what context? What are the word roots?)
Exclusion (What is not meant by the term?)
Differentiation from other terms (What is the difference, for instance, between a “nerd” and a “geek”? A “dweeb”?)
Classification (Are there certain types or kinds of said term which can help us to define it? For example, can considering different kinds of love–carnal, platonic, filial, etc.–help us to define love more generally? Note: while this strategy may work well for “love,” it may prove less useful when the task before you is to define a different word–“terrorism,” for example.)
Comparison/Contrast (Finding similarities within differences or differences within similarities)
Cause and Effect (What causes “Juvenile Delinquency”? A term, by the way, first used in the 1940’s and now falling out of fashion. See the song “Officer Krupke” from West Side Story for the answer!)
Process (What steps or stages are necessary to produce a certain result?)
Analogy (Look it up. Get in the habit of looking up words.)
Description (If you were attempting to define “femininity,” for example, you might begin with description.)

Your essay must have a central claim/thesis statement about the text stated in your introductory paragraph.

For this assignment, you will be critically responding to a topic of your choice from Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto. This essay will give you the experience of developing your topic, selecting relevant source material, and using close textual analysis (aka close reading) to support your thesis. Your essay must have a central claim/thesis statement about the text stated in your introductory paragraph. You will then devote one paragraph to briefly summarize the part of the text you plan to address, focusing on the material that is most relevant to your central claim. The rest of your essay will involve two to three close readings and the use of textual evidence to support your central claim and the secondary claims you will make in each paragraph.
