A thesis statement for a compare and contrast paper should contain an idea or a claim that unites the discussion of the two works.

The purpose of this essay is for you to demonstrate the analytical skills you have been developing throughout the semester through in-class discussions and active participation. You have two options for completing the assignment, but both options involve comparing and contrasting two different works. The purpose of a compare and contrast essay is to make connections between different works and go beyond surface-level description or summary in order to highlight important elements and ideas in the works. Your essay should use your points of comparison and contrast to show the reader something new and interesting about both works.
A thesis statement for a compare and contrast paper should contain an idea or a claim that unites the discussion of the two works. It could argue that two works from very different cultures have interesting similarities or that the differing views of a particular issue show an important conflict, or that two works have both similarities and differences that are significant.
The two works of comparison I will be focusing on will be Ramayana and Mahabharata. I chose to focus on these two because they both carried a similar responsibility to maintain rightful order. They both were also big on the ethics of their respective culture. Both stories tell the story of how the foundation was created for Indian culture and the importance of their cultural dharma.
I found this to be an interesting route in comparison because both stories were focused on depicting the story that every character must follow their duty no matter their social status. I believe that to be very relatable to modern day expectations despite having multiple cultural differences. I initially had a hard time understanding the relevance to each epic but after I removed myself from an educational standpoint and attempted to be more of a character, I was able to understand the importance of the duty, sacrifices, loyalty and ethics of both the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The current state of society is actually how I found these epics to be relatable and potentially useful for any attempt at restoring humanity in our everyday lives. Both epics demonstrated the importance of respecting your loved ones, protecting the lives of weaker people, having integrity and so many more basic principles that are detrimental to the future generations of any culture. I would like to expand on the fact Rama stayed true to his life’s path. The Ramayana played a major role in the Hindu culture retelling the lessons learned by Rama throughout his adventures.
The overall goal of my essay will be to explain how both Indian epics can play beneficial roles in saving our world as we currently know it.
